Role titles are common patterns in Indian job listings, not a complete list. Small companies often combine several of these into one "digital marketing executive" job.
1. What does SEO involve day to day?
Search engine optimisation earns unpaid traffic from Google and other search engines. A typical week includes keyword research, writing or updating content briefs, fixing technical issues found in Google Search Console, building internal links and reporting organic traffic and leads.
SEO rewards patience and structured thinking. Results build over months, and the same work now affects whether pages are cited in AI answers such as Google's AI Overviews. Read what is SEO for a full beginner explanation.
2. What is paid search marketing (SEM)?
Paid search means buying ads that appear when people search, mostly through Google Ads. You choose keywords, write ads, set budgets and bids, and pay when someone clicks. Search ads catch people who already want something, such as "CA coaching in Delhi" or "buy running shoes size 9".
Daily work: checking the search terms report, adding negative keywords, testing ad copy, adjusting bids and making sure conversion tracking works. Google's Keyword Planner is part of Google Ads and needs a Google Ads account with billing details set up. Our Google Ads certification guide explains Google's free training and exams.
3. How is paid social different?
Paid social means ads on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and similar platforms. Unlike search, people are not looking for you, so the ad has to interrupt with a strong hook. Targeting is by audience (interests, lookalikes, job titles on LinkedIn) rather than keywords.
Daily work: briefing and testing creatives, especially short videos, watching cost per result, and moving budget to what works. D2C brands in India rely heavily on Meta ads; B2B companies use LinkedIn. Together with paid search, this is often called performance marketing.
4. What does organic social media marketing involve?
Organic social is unpaid posting and community work: Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn posts, WhatsApp communities and replying to comments and messages. The goal is attention and trust that you do not pay for per view.
Daily work: planning a content calendar, writing captions and scripts, coordinating with designers or editors, posting, replying and reviewing what performed. Good social marketers study formats closely: why one Reel was saved and shared while another was skipped.

Content marketing creates useful material that attracts and convinces customers: blog posts, guides, videos, case studies, newsletters and tools such as calculators. It overlaps with SEO and social, because content is what those channels distribute.
Daily work: researching topics, interviewing internal experts, writing and editing, repurposing one piece into many formats, and measuring which pieces lead to sign-ups or sales. Strong writing is the core skill. AI tools can speed up research and first drafts, but facts, examples and voice still need a human check.
6. What does email, CRM and WhatsApp marketing involve?
This is lifecycle marketing: talking to people who already know you. It covers welcome emails, abandoned-cart reminders, newsletters, re-engagement flows and, in India especially, WhatsApp messages for order updates and offers.
Daily work: segmenting contacts, writing emails, building automated flows, cleaning lists and tracking revenue per send. Tools include HubSpot, Mailchimp and Klaviyo; WhatsApp has a Business app for small businesses and a Business Platform for larger volumes. Prices and free tiers change, so see each vendor's pricing page. Because people have opted in, this channel is often among the cheapest ways to drive repeat sales.
7. How does influencer and creator marketing work?
Brands pay or partner with creators to feature products to their audience. In India this ranges from celebrity campaigns to many small, regional-language creators with engaged followings.
Daily work: finding creators whose audience matches the customer, negotiating deliverables, sending briefs, approving content, tracking promo codes or links, and checking compliance. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has guidelines for influencer advertising that require promotional content to carry a clear, upfront disclosure label, such as "Ad" or "Collaboration". Both the brand and the influencer are responsible.
8. What is affiliate and partner marketing?
Affiliates are publishers, such as deal sites, review blogs, coupon apps and comparison sites, that promote a product and earn a commission on each sale or lead. Partner marketing extends this to co-marketing with other brands.
Daily work: recruiting and managing affiliates, setting commission rules, checking tracking, and watching for fraud or poor-quality traffic. It is common in e-commerce, fintech and edtech. It suits people who like numbers and negotiation.
9. Why is marketing analytics a type of its own?
Every channel above needs measurement. Marketing analytics sets up tracking, builds dashboards and answers questions like "which channel brings customers who stay?" It is the link between marketing spend and business results.
Daily work: setting up events and conversions in Google Analytics 4, tagging campaign links with UTM parameters, building reports in Looker Studio or Sheets, and explaining results to channel owners. Our GA4 tutorial for beginners is a good place to start, and Google's GA4 demo account lets you practise on real, obfuscated data at no cost.
Which type of digital marketing should you choose?
Choose by the work you enjoy, not by what sounds most in demand. This is our editorial guide:
| If you enjoy... | Start with | First project to try |
|---|---|---|
| Writing and explaining | Content, SEO or email | Write and optimise three articles for a small business site |
| Numbers and experiments | Paid search, paid social or analytics | Plan a Google Ads search campaign for a local business, with a budget |
| Trends, video and community | Organic social or influencer | Run a 30-day Reels or Shorts plan for a page you manage |
| Structure and systems | Email and CRM, or analytics | Build a three-email welcome flow and a GA4 report for it |
| Negotiation and relationships | Affiliate or influencer | Shortlist ten creators for a brand and write a brief |
Whatever you pick, learn the basics of analytics and how channels feed each other. A strong SEO article is also social content, an email topic and a landing page for ads. Hiring managers value people who see those links.
How do these types turn into jobs in India?
Freshers usually enter as an executive or associate in one channel at an agency, a D2C brand, an edtech or fintech company or a startup's growth team. After two or three years, many move into channel ownership (for example, performance marketing manager) or broaden into growth and brand roles.
Pay depends on role, city and company, so check dated sources when you compare offers; our digital marketing salary guide explains the main drivers. For titles, listings and a 60-day plan, see digital marketing jobs for freshers. For a full route in, read how to become a digital marketer in India.
How can you learn several types without getting lost?
Start with free official training for the tools (Google's Skillshop and Search Central, Meta Blueprint, HubSpot Academy), then do one small project per type. Our digital marketing course syllabus guide shows how the types fit together over 16 weeks.
The ISS Marketing & Growth program is one structured option. It runs 16 weeks live online, about 12–14 hours a week. The published first six weeks cover foundations, customer research and positioning, copywriting and content, two weeks of SEO and organic social; the program also covers paid media, email automation and AI workflows, ending in a portfolio capstone. The fee is ₹69,999 (₹66,499 if paid upfront). ISS does not guarantee jobs or placement.
