Which Google Ads certifications are there?
Google runs its certifications on Skillshop, its free training site. Google's help page on certifications lists five product-area certifications that count toward Google Partners status, and the Skillshop Google Ads page also lists a Measurement certification. The catalogue changes from time to time, so check Skillshop for the current list.
| Certification | What it tests | Who should take it first |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads Search | Search campaigns, keywords and match types, responsive search ads, bidding, AI-powered search features | Almost everyone; search is the core Google Ads skill |
| Google Ads Display | Display campaigns, audiences, responsive display ads, reach and awareness goals | People working on awareness or remarketing |
| Google Ads Video | YouTube advertising, video ad formats, video campaign goals and measurement | Brand and video marketers |
| Shopping ads (listed on Skillshop as AI-Powered Shopping Ads) | Merchant Center, product feeds, Shopping and Performance Max for retail | E-commerce and D2C marketers |
| Google Ads Apps | App campaigns for installs and in-app actions | People marketing mobile apps |
| Google Ads Measurement | Conversion tracking, attribution, measurement tools and reading results | Anyone who reports on campaigns; a strong second certification |
Topic descriptions above are our summary of each learning path. Google also runs a separate Google Analytics Certification on Skillshop, which pairs well with Measurement; our GA4 tutorial for beginners covers the basics it tests.
What are Google Ads Professional certifications?
Google has also introduced Professional certifications in Search, Display and Video. Skillshop's help page says they test both conceptual and procedural knowledge, are virtually proctored, and were available only to a limited audience at no charge during a pilot. It also says these exams will require a fee in future and that they do not count toward Google Partners requirements. If you see one offered to you, read its page carefully; most beginners should start with the standard certifications.
How does the Google Ads certification exam work?
These rules come from Google Ads Help, "About Google Ads certifications", checked in September 2026.
| Rule | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Cost | Skillshop training and the standard certification assessments are free |
| Time limit | 75 minutes per assessment |
| Pass mark | A score of 80% or greater |
| If you fail | You can retake the assessment one day later |
| Pausing | You cannot pause an assessment once started; closing the browser expires the timer |
| Validity | One year, after which you retake the assessment |
| Languages | Offered in 22 languages |
| Your certificate | Viewable and downloadable from the My Activities page in Skillshop |
Google's help page does not state the number of questions, and third-party guides quote different figures, so we have left that out. Study for application, not memory: be ready to pick the right campaign type, bidding strategy or setting for a given business goal.
How do you get Google Ads certified, step by step?
- Sign in to Skillshop with a Google account. Use the account you will keep long term, because your certificates stay with it.
- Choose the certification. Start with Google Ads Search unless your job is clearly in video, apps or retail.
- Work through the learning path. Take notes in your own words, especially on bidding strategies, match types and conversion tracking.
- Practise in a real interface. Open a Google Ads account and build a campaign structure without launching it, and explore Keyword Planner (Google requires billing details to be set up to use its keyword ideas).
- Book 75 quiet minutes. Use a laptop with a stable connection; you cannot pause.
- Take the assessment. If you score under 80%, review weak topics and retake after a day.
- Download and share. Download the certificate from My Activities and add it to your LinkedIn Licences & certifications section with the issue date.

View Marketing & Growth curriculum →What is a good two-week study plan for the Search certification?
This plan assumes about an hour a day on weekdays and two hours at weekends. It is our editorial suggestion, not a Google requirement.
| Days | Learn | Do |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | How Google Ads works: auction, Quality Score, campaign structure | Sketch a campaign and ad group structure for a local coaching centre |
| 3–4 | Keywords, match types, negative keywords | Build a 40-keyword list in Keyword Planner and group it by intent |
| 5–6 | Responsive search ads and assets (sitelinks, callouts) | Write 15 headlines and 4 descriptions for one ad group |
| 7–8 | Bidding strategies: Maximise conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS, manual CPC | Write one line on when you would choose each |
| 9–10 | Conversion tracking and linking Google Ads with GA4 | Explore the GA4 demo account and find the key events report |
| 11–12 | AI features in search: broad match with smart bidding, Performance Max basics | Note the trade-offs in control versus automation |
| 13 | Review weak areas | Re-read your notes and redo the tasks you found hardest |
| 14 | Take the assessment | 75 minutes, no interruptions |
Topics that commonly trip people up
- Match types: know how broad, phrase and exact match differ and how negative keywords interact with them.
- Bidding: which automated strategy fits which goal, and why conversion data matters before switching to it.
- Ad Rank and Quality Score: what influences them and why a higher bid alone does not guarantee position.
- Measurement: the difference between a click, a conversion and a conversion value.
What does a Google Ads certification actually prove?
It proves you understand how Google Ads is built and what Google considers best practice. That has real value: it shows effort, gives you shared vocabulary for interviews, and agencies care because Google Partners status requires that at least 50% of a company's account strategists are certified.
It does not prove that you can make campaigns profitable. The exam does not ask you to manage a budget, write ads that convert or diagnose a campaign that is wasting money. Many applicants for entry-level roles in India hold the same free badge, so on its own it rarely separates you.
| Signal | What an employer learns | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads Search certification | You know the platform and its terms | About two weeks part-time |
| Certification plus a campaign plan | You can structure an account for a real business | Add a weekend |
| Certification plus a small live test with results | You can spend money carefully and explain what happened | A few weeks and a small, capped budget |
The strongest move is to pair the certificate with evidence. Plan a campaign for a local business, or run a tightly capped test for a small project of your own, and write up the goal, setup, numbers and what you would change. Our performance marketing portfolio guide shows how to present that, and our guide to learning Google Ads lists safe ways to get hands-on practice.
How do Google Ads certifications come up in interviews?
Interviewers rarely ask whether you are certified; they check your LinkedIn for that. They ask how you would act. Expect questions such as "A search campaign's cost per lead doubled last week. What do you check first?" or "When would you move from Maximise clicks to Target CPA?" Practise answering out loud with a reason for each step. Our digital marketing interview questions guide has more examples.
Where does ISS fit in?
ISS does not run Google's exam and does not issue Google certifications. Skillshop is the right place for the badge. The ISS Marketing & Growth program is a 16-week live online cohort, about 12–14 hours a week, that covers paid media inside a full-funnel curriculum and ends with a portfolio capstone. The fee is ₹69,999 (₹66,499 if paid upfront), and career support includes resume, LinkedIn and portfolio reviews and mock interviews. ISS does not guarantee jobs or placement. If you only need the Google Ads badge, Skillshop plus practice may be enough.
