What digital marketing jobs can freshers apply for?
Titles vary between companies, and small firms often roll several roles into one. These are the entry-level titles you will see most often on Indian job boards.
| Role title | What you do | Skills to show | Portfolio piece that helps most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital marketing executive | A mix of social, SEO, ads and email for one company or several agency clients | Broad channel basics, reporting, coordination | A one-page marketing plan for a real small business |
| Social media executive | Content calendars, posting, captions, community replies, basic reporting | Writing, format sense for Reels and Shorts, Canva | A 30-day content plan plus 10 sample posts |
| SEO executive or analyst | Keyword research, on-page fixes, content briefs, Search Console reporting | Search intent, structured thinking, spreadsheets | A technical audit and keyword map for a real site |
| Content writer or content marketing executive | Blogs, landing pages, emails, scripts | Clear writing, research, editing, SEO basics | Three published pieces with a short note on the goal of each |
| Performance marketing or PPC trainee | Supporting Google Ads and Meta ads campaigns, reports, creative testing | Numbers, Excel or Sheets, ads platform basics | A campaign plan with budget and targets, or a small capped test |
| Email or CRM associate | Newsletters, automated flows, list hygiene, WhatsApp campaigns | Segmentation, copy, attention to detail | A three-email welcome flow with subject-line variants |
| Marketing analyst (junior) | Tracking, dashboards, campaign reports | GA4, UTMs, spreadsheets, Looker Studio | A dashboard built from the GA4 demo account |

What do entry-level digital marketing listings ask for?
We looked at digital marketing internship listings on Internshala in September 2026 to see what employers were asking for. Common skill tags included social media marketing, SEO, email marketing, content and creative writing, English proficiency, MS Office or Google Workspace, and data tools such as Google Analytics. Common internship titles included social media marketing, SEO and content marketing, growth marketing, lead generation, and influencer marketing.
Across entry-level roles, the requirements usually fall into four groups:
- Channel basics: you can explain how SEO, paid ads, social and email differ, and go deeper in one.
- Communication: clear written English, and often Hindi or a regional language for consumer brands.
- Spreadsheets and reporting: sorting, filters, simple formulas and a clean weekly report.
- Tool familiarity: Google Analytics 4, Meta Business Suite, Canva, and for ads roles, Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager.
What listings rarely demand is a specific degree. A certificate helps you pass a keyword filter, but a short, relevant portfolio is what gets discussed in the interview.
What do fresher internships pay?
Stipends on the Internshala listings we viewed in September 2026 ranged from around ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 or more a month, with most internships lasting one to six months. This is a snapshot of one board on one day, not a survey. For full-time pay, check dated salary sources for your role and city; our digital marketing salary guide explains what drives offers up or down.
Need a portfolio before you start applying?
The ISS Marketing & Growth program builds a portfolio output most weeks, from a brand funnel audit in Week 1 to an SEO audit in Week 5, and ends in a capstone. Compare it with the self-built route in this guide, and download the free portfolio kit below either way.
View Marketing & Growth curriculum →What should a fresher's digital marketing portfolio include?
Two or three strong pieces for your target role beat ten shallow ones. Each piece should fit on one page and answer four questions: what was the goal, what did you do, what happened (or what do you expect), and what would you change.
- A brand teardown: pick an Indian D2C brand, map its funnel from ad to checkout, and suggest three improvements.
- A channel project: an SEO audit, a Google Ads campaign plan, a 30-day social calendar, or an email flow, matching the role you want.
- A measurement piece: a GA4 report from Google's free demo account, or UTM-tagged links for a campaign you ran, with results.
Real results, even small ones, stand out. Helping a family business, a local tutor or a college society with a capped budget gives you numbers to discuss. Our portfolio guide for freshers shows how to lay these out, and the performance marketing portfolio guide covers ads case studies.
Where should freshers look for digital marketing jobs?
| Where | Best for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Jobs and posts | Startups, agencies, D2C brands; many roles are shared in posts before listings | Follow marketing leaders at companies you like and reply to hiring posts with a portfolio link |
| Naukri and foundit | Volume of full-time executive roles across cities | Use exact titles such as "SEO executive" and set alerts by city |
| Internshala | Internships and fresher roles, including remote | Apply to internships that name specific tasks, not only "marketing support" |
| Company career pages | Brands you already use and understand | Mention something specific about their marketing in your note |
| Agency websites | Fast learning across many clients | Agencies often hire trainees in batches; email with a short portfolio |
| Referrals and alumni | Skipping the application pile | Ask for 15 minutes of advice, not a job; share your work |
Agencies in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Pune and Hyderabad offer the widest variety of work for freshers, while in-house roles at brands give deeper ownership of one product. Remote and hybrid roles exist but usually attract more applicants per opening.
What does a 60-day job-search plan look like?
This is our editorial plan for a fresher who can give it two to three hours a day. Adjust the pace to your situation.
| Days | Focus | Output by the end |
|---|---|---|
| 1–7 | Pick one target role. Read 20 listings for it and note repeated skills and tools. | A one-page list of skills you have and gaps to close |
| 8–21 | Close the top gaps with free official training (for example Google Skillshop, HubSpot Academy, Meta Blueprint). Start portfolio piece one. | One certificate relevant to the role; first portfolio piece drafted |
| 22–35 | Build portfolio pieces two and three. Update your resume and LinkedIn headline to match the role title. | A three-piece portfolio (Notion, Google Drive or a simple site) and a one-page resume |
| 36–50 | Apply to 5–8 well-matched roles a day, each with a two-line note about the company. Message two people a day for advice. | A tracker with every application, date and follow-up |
| 51–60 | Prepare for interviews: practise explaining each portfolio piece in two minutes, and do a take-home task in a timed setting. | Answers to 20 common questions, practised out loud |
Keep applying while you build; days 36–60 are when interviews usually start to arrive, but there is no fixed timeline. If you get no replies after about 50 targeted applications, change the resume or the role, not only the volume.
What do fresher interviews in digital marketing look like?
Most processes have a screening call, a task, and one or two interviews. Tasks are often small and practical: write five ad headlines, plan a week of posts, audit a landing page, or explain a report. Interviewers look for reasoning: why you chose a channel, what metric you would track and what you would do if it dropped.
Our digital marketing interview questions guide covers common questions and how to answer with your own work. If you want an ads role, a free Google Ads certification is a useful baseline to add before interviews.
What mistakes do freshers make when applying?
- Applying to every marketing title with the same resume.
- Listing tools without showing anything built with them.
- Sending a portfolio of screenshots with no goal, numbers or explanation.
- Paying for a course that promises a guaranteed job. No honest course can promise that.
- Ignoring internships. A three-month internship with real tasks often leads to a full-time offer or a much stronger next application.
Can a structured program help?
Many freshers get hired with free resources and self-built projects. A structured program helps if you want deadlines, mentor feedback and a planned portfolio. The ISS Marketing & Growth program is a 16-week live online cohort, about 12–14 hours a week. Week 1 includes decoding real marketing job descriptions, and each published week ends in an output, such as an ICP and positioning statement, a 30-day content calendar, a keyword map and an SEO audit report. Career support covers resume, LinkedIn and portfolio reviews, mock interviews and job-search guidance. The fee is ₹69,999 (₹66,499 if paid upfront). ISS does not guarantee jobs or placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fresher get a digital marketing job without experience?
Yes. Many entry-level roles and internships in India are open to freshers. Employers usually look for channel basics, good communication and two or three portfolio pieces that show how you think.
Which digital marketing job is best for freshers?
It depends on your strengths. Writers often start as content or SEO executives, people who like numbers as PPC trainees or junior analysts, and people who enjoy video and trends as social media executives.
Do I need a certificate to get a digital marketing job?
A certificate is not usually required, but a free one such as Google Ads or HubSpot can help your resume pass keyword filters. A short portfolio of real work matters more in interviews.
Where can freshers find digital marketing jobs in India?
LinkedIn, Naukri, foundit and Internshala list many fresher roles and internships. Company career pages, agency websites and referrals from alumni are also worth using.
How long does it take to get a first digital marketing job?
There is no fixed timeline. A focused plan of about 60 days, covering skill gaps, portfolio pieces and targeted applications, is a realistic starting point, but results vary by role, city and market.
Should I take a digital marketing internship first?
If you have no work to show, yes. An internship with specific tasks gives you real results for your portfolio and often leads to a full-time offer or a stronger next application.
