What subjects should a digital marketing syllabus include?
Whatever the course length, these are the areas a job-ready marketer in India is expected to understand. Short courses cover fewer of them in depth; that is fine if the course says so clearly.
- Marketing foundations: funnels, positioning, unit economics (CAC, LTV, ROAS).
- Customer research: ideal customer profile (ICP), interviews, competitor analysis.
- Copywriting and content strategy: hooks, offers, calls to action, content calendars.
- SEO: keyword research, on-page, technical and local SEO, and visibility in AI search answers.
- Social media: organic strategy for Instagram, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn, plus community.
- Paid search: Google Ads Search, Performance Max and YouTube.
- Paid social: Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram), creative testing.
- Email and automation: segmentation, drip flows, WhatsApp and CRM basics.
- Analytics: GA4, Google Tag Manager, conversion tracking, dashboards.
- AI workflows: using AI for research, copy variants and reporting, with human review.
- Capstone: a full campaign or brand teardown you can show in interviews.

View Marketing & Growth curriculum →Why does GA4 need its own place in the syllabus?
Google Analytics 4 is now the standard version of Google Analytics. Google's help centre says standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data on 1 July 2023, and all access to them ended on 1 July 2024. A course that still teaches Universal Analytics reports is teaching a tool that no longer works.
GA4 is also the link between channels. Google Ads, Meta ads, SEO and email all need proper conversion tracking to be judged fairly. That is why the model syllabus gives analytics two weeks before the paid media modules, not after them.
You can practise free with Google's GA4 demo account, which gives any Google user viewer access to obfuscated data from the Google Merchandise Store.
How should AI appear in a digital marketing syllabus?
AI should run through the whole course, not sit in one lecture at the end. Look for:
- Research: using AI tools to summarise reviews and competitor pages, then checking the output.
- Copy: generating ad and email variants from a clear positioning brief, then editing for brand voice.
- Search: how AI answers in search engines change SEO, and how to be cited in them.
- Automation: connecting tools with no-code platforms such as Zapier or Make.
- Judgement: knowing what not to automate, and checking facts and claims before publishing.
How do real course syllabi compare?
Here is how three different options map to the core areas, based on their official pages as checked in September 2026.
| Area | Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce (Coursera) | upGrad + MICA (core) | ISS Marketing & Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Self-paced, 8 courses | Recorded + live, 4-month core | Live cohort, 16 weeks |
| Customer research and positioning | Not a headline module; check syllabus | Marketing fundamentals and consumer behaviour | Week 2 on the programme page |
| SEO | Search marketing | SEO strategy and optimisation | Weeks 4–5, including AI search visibility |
| Paid ads | Google Ads taught | Meta Ads and Google Ads modules | Paid media covered; details in brochure |
| Analytics | Marketing analytics; Google Analytics | Web and app analytics | Covered; details in brochure |
| AI | AI skills for marketing | Marketing automation and agentic AI (Advanced track) | AI workflows and automation |
| Capstone | Projects across courses | Projects and case studies | Portfolio capstone: full marketing teardown |
| Fee | Coursera subscription; check Coursera's page | ₹84,999 listed for the core | ₹69,999 (₹66,499 upfront) |
Each has strengths. The Google certificate is low-cost and self-paced. The MICA programme carries a B-school name and optional specialisations. ISS offers live weekly classes and mentor feedback. Read our upGrad digital marketing review for more detail.
How do you check a course syllabus before you pay?
- Ask for the full week-by-week plan, not just a list of modules.
- Check for an output each week. If the syllabus lists topics but no deliverables, you may finish with nothing to show.
- Check GA4 and tracking. Any mention of Universal Analytics is a red flag.
- Check for customer research and copy. Courses that jump straight to tools skip the thinking employers test.
- Check how paid media is practised. Real accounts, sandbox accounts or screenshots?
- Check the capstone. Will it be a case study you can present in an interview?
- Check the hours. Compare the weekly commitment with your real schedule.
- Check the promises. Be wary of any course that guarantees a job or salary.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the syllabus of a digital marketing course?
A complete syllabus covers marketing foundations, customer research, copywriting, SEO, social media, Google Ads, Meta ads, email and automation, GA4 analytics, AI workflows and a capstone project.
How long should a digital marketing course be?
A course that covers all core areas with practice usually needs three to four months. Short courses of a few weeks can work well for a single skill, such as Google Ads or SEO.
Should a digital marketing course still teach Universal Analytics?
No. Google says standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data on 1 July 2023, and access ended on 1 July 2024. Courses should teach GA4.
Does the digital marketing syllabus include AI in 2026?
A current syllabus should use AI across research, copywriting, SEO and automation, and teach you to check AI output before using it. Look for AI in several modules, not one lecture.
What is covered in the first weeks of the ISS digital marketing programme?
The ISS programme page shows weeks 1 to 6: digital marketing foundations and career map, customer research and positioning, copywriting and content strategy, two weeks of SEO including AI search visibility, and organic social and community growth.
