What is SEO in simple words?
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It means shaping your website and its content so that when someone searches for something you offer, your page shows up in the free, organic results rather than only in the ads.
Think of a physiotherapy clinic in Pune. If someone searches "physiotherapist for back pain near Kothrud", the clinic wants to appear in the map results and the regular results. SEO is everything the clinic does to earn that spot: a clear page about back-pain treatment, an accurate Google Business Profile, reviews, a fast mobile site and mentions from local websites.
Organic results are not bought. Google's Search Essentials state that it doesn't cost any money to appear in Google Search results. That is the main difference from paid search, where you pay per click. Our guide to SEO vs performance marketing compares the two in detail.
How does Google Search actually work?
Google describes Search as three stages. Every SEO task you will ever do supports one of them.
| Stage | What Google does | What SEO work supports it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crawling | Automated programs (Googlebot) discover pages by following links and download their text, images and video | Crawlable links, an XML sitemap, a sensible robots.txt, no broken internal links |
| 2. Indexing | Google analyses the page content and stores it in the Google index | Unique titles, clear headings, canonical tags, avoiding duplicate or thin pages |
| 3. Serving results | For each search, Google returns the most relevant, useful pages from its index | Content that matches search intent, helpful detail, trust signals, good page experience |
Two points from Google's documentation are worth remembering. First, Google does not guarantee it will crawl, index or show any page, even one that follows every guideline. Second, Googlebot renders JavaScript using a recent version of Chrome, so modern sites can be indexed, but content that only appears after complex scripts can still cause problems.
What are the main types of SEO?
Most people split SEO into three areas. Local SEO and AI search visibility are often treated as extra areas, but they build on the same three.
On-page SEO
On-page SEO is everything on the page itself. It starts with search intent: working out what the searcher actually wants. Someone typing "digital marketing course fees" wants numbers and a comparison, not a history of marketing.
- Title tag and meta description: the clickable headline and snippet in results. Keep the main topic early in the title.
- Headings: one H1, then H2s that follow the questions people ask.
- Content: answers the query fully, with specifics, examples and up-to-date facts.
- Internal links: links to related pages on your own site with descriptive anchor text.
- Images: descriptive file names and alt text.
Google's guidance on helpful content asks you to write for people first and to make it clear who wrote the page, how it was made and why it exists. It also describes E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, with trust as the most important.
Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO is about your reputation on the rest of the web. The best-known part is backlinks: other sites linking to yours. A mention from a respected industry publication, a local newspaper or a university page tells search engines that others vouch for you.
Good off-page work looks like digital PR, original data other people want to cite, guest articles on relevant sites and reviews on platforms your customers use. Buying links or joining link schemes breaks Google's spam policies and can get pages demoted or removed.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl, render and index your site, and that it works well for users. Google notes that most sites pass its technical requirements without trying, so technical SEO is usually about finding and fixing problems, not magic settings.
- Indexing issues shown in Google Search Console, which Google describes as a free service for monitoring your site in Search
- Mobile usability and page speed
- Core Web Vitals: Google's targets are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1
- Structured data (schema markup) for things like FAQs, products, reviews and articles
- Redirects, canonical tags, sitemaps and robots.txt
Local SEO
For businesses that serve a city or neighbourhood, local SEO covers the Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone number across listings, reviews and location pages. For a coaching institute in Jaipur or a bakery in Kochi, this is often where most leads come from.

View Marketing & Growth curriculum →How do AI Overviews and AI search change SEO?
Google now shows AI-generated summaries, called AI Overviews, above many results, and offers a conversational AI Mode. Both link to supporting web pages. This worries many beginners, so it helps to look at what Google itself says.
- No special optimisation: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations are needed.
- Eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. In other words, normal SEO is the entry ticket.
- Measurement: traffic from these AI features is included in the Performance report in Search Console, under the "Web" search type. Google Analytics also counts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks as Organic Search in its default channel definitions.
- Controls: site owners can limit what is shown using
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetornoindex.
What changes in practice is how you write. AI answers pull specific passages, so pages that answer a question directly near the top, use clear headings and state facts with sources are easier to quote. Many marketers call this answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO). Treat these as an extension of SEO, not a separate discipline.
Visibility also now extends beyond Google. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations. A simple habit is to write down ten questions your customers ask, check monthly which brands those assistants mention, and note which sources they cite.
What is a good SEO checklist for beginners?
If you have a site of your own, a blog or a family business's website, work through this list in order. It is our editorial checklist, based on Google's published guidance.
| Step | What to do | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify the site in Search Console and submit a sitemap | Google Search Console |
| 2 | Check which pages are indexed and fix "not indexed" reasons that matter | Search Console Pages report |
| 3 | List 20 questions customers ask; group them by intent | Search Console queries, Google autocomplete, "People also ask" |
| 4 | Map one main page to each group; avoid two pages chasing the same query | A spreadsheet |
| 5 | Rewrite titles and H1s so the topic is clear; add a direct answer near the top | Your CMS |
| 6 | Add internal links from related pages | Your CMS |
| 7 | Test speed and Core Web Vitals on mobile | PageSpeed Insights |
| 8 | Claim and complete a Google Business Profile if you serve a location | Google Business Profile |
| 9 | Earn two or three genuine links or mentions from relevant sites | Outreach, PR, partnerships |
| 10 | Review clicks, impressions and positions monthly; update pages that slip | Search Console, Google Analytics 4 |
Measuring results is a skill of its own. Our GA4 tutorial for beginners shows how to see which organic pages actually bring enquiries or sales, not only visits.
Common beginner mistakes
- Chasing high-volume keywords the site cannot yet compete for, instead of specific long-tail questions.
- Publishing many short, similar pages, which Google's helpful-content guidance warns against.
- Stuffing the keyword into every sentence. Write naturally and cover the topic fully.
- Expecting results in days. SEO changes often take weeks or months to show.
- Publishing AI-drafted text without checking facts. Google asks creators to be open about how content was made and to focus on usefulness.
What SEO jobs are there in India?
SEO is a common entry point into marketing because you can practise it for free on your own site. Typical role titles in Indian job listings include:
- SEO executive or SEO analyst: keyword research, on-page fixes, reporting. Common at agencies and in-house teams.
- Content writer or SEO content specialist: writes and updates pages against a brief.
- Technical SEO specialist: audits, site migrations, structured data, working with developers.
- SEO manager or organic growth lead: strategy, budgets, and reporting SEO's effect on leads and revenue.
Pay varies widely by city, company and specialisation, so check dated salary sources before judging an offer. Our digital marketing salary guide explains what drives pay, and digital marketing jobs for freshers covers entry-level titles and where to apply.
To get hired, show work. A technical audit of a real small-business site, a keyword map with one full content brief, and an AI-search visibility check make a strong starter portfolio. See our portfolio guide for freshers for how to present them.
How can you learn SEO?
Start free. Google's SEO Starter Guide and Search Central documentation are the primary source for how Google works. Then practise on a site you control. If you want structured study, our guide on how to choose an SEO course in India compares free and paid options.
At ISS, SEO is part of the 16-week Marketing & Growth program rather than a standalone course. Week 4 covers keyword intent mapping and an SEO content brief lab, with a keyword map and article brief as the output. Week 5 covers a technical SEO audit plus local and AI search visibility, with an SEO audit report as the output. The program runs live online, about 12–14 hours a week, for ₹69,999 (₹66,499 if paid upfront). ISS does not guarantee jobs or placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SEO in one sentence?
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the practice of improving a website and its content so it appears in unpaid search results for the queries your customers type.
What are the three main types of SEO?
On-page SEO covers the content and HTML of each page, off-page SEO covers links and reputation on other sites, and technical SEO covers crawling, indexing, speed and site structure. Local SEO and AI search visibility build on these three.
Do I need to pay Google for SEO?
No. Google states that it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher, and that appearing in Google Search results costs nothing. You may pay for tools, content or an agency, but not for organic rankings.
Is SEO still worth learning with AI Overviews?
Yes. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no special optimisation is needed beyond normal SEO. The fundamentals decide AI visibility too.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Small fixes such as better titles can show changes within weeks, while new content and link building usually take a few months. Google does not guarantee that any page will be crawled, indexed or ranked.
Can a fresher get an SEO job in India?
Yes, SEO executive and SEO content roles are common entry points. Employers usually want proof of practical work, such as a site audit and keyword map, alongside any certificate. No course can guarantee a job.
