Social Media Marketing in India: A Practical 2026 Guide with a 30-Day Content Calendar

Social media marketing works when you choose a small number of platforms your customers actually use, post to a plan, and measure what leads to enquiries or sales. This guide shows how to do that for an Indian audience, with a calendar you can copy.

Social media marketing guide with a 30-day content calendar
Quick answer: Social media marketing means using platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp to reach, engage and convert customers, through organic posts and paid ads. In India, YouTube and Instagram have the largest ad audiences, at about 500 million and 481 million users in late 2025 according to DataReportal, while LinkedIn reaches about 170 million members and suits B2B. Start with one or two platforms, a 30-day content plan built on customer questions, and metrics tied to enquiries or sales rather than likes.

What is social media marketing?

Social media marketing is the planned use of social platforms to reach the right people, build trust and get them to act: follow, enquire, sign up or buy. It has two halves that work together:

  • Organic: posts, Reels, Shorts, Stories, community replies and creator collaborations that you do not pay platforms to distribute.
  • Paid: ads on Meta (Instagram and Facebook), YouTube, LinkedIn and other platforms, targeted and measured against a goal.

A social media executive in India usually handles content planning, copy, basic design or video editing, community management and reporting. In many companies they also run or support paid campaigns. See types of digital marketing for how social fits alongside SEO, email and search ads.

Which social media platforms should you use in India?

Choose based on where your customers spend time and what format suits your product. Advertising reach figures give a sense of scale; note that DataReportal says these are ad audience figures, not monthly active users.

PlatformAd reach in India, late 2025 (DataReportal)Best suited toFormats that work
YouTubeAbout 500 millionEducation, reviews, how-to, regional-language content, long consideration purchasesLong videos, Shorts
InstagramAbout 481 millionD2C brands, food, fashion, beauty, local businesses, creatorsReels, carousels, Stories
FacebookAbout 403 millionLocal services, community groups, older and non-metro audiences, ads reachVideo, groups, ads
SnapchatAbout 213 millionYounger audiencesShort vertical video, AR lenses
LinkedInAbout 170 million membersB2B, SaaS, hiring, professional services, personal brandsText posts, documents, short video
XAbout 22.2 millionNews, tech, customer support, public conversationShort text, threads

WhatsApp is not in this table because it is a messaging app, but for many Indian businesses it is where the sale actually closes. Plan how a social post leads to a WhatsApp or website enquiry, and who replies.

Quick rules of thumb: a Lucknow bakery probably needs Instagram and WhatsApp; a Bengaluru SaaS startup selling to HR teams needs LinkedIn first; an edtech brand teaching in Tamil may get more from YouTube than anywhere else.

How do you plan social media content?

Start from customers, not from trends. A simple planning process:

  1. Collect questions and objections. Read reviews, DMs, comments and sales call notes. List the 20 things customers ask most.
  2. Set three to four content pillars. For example, for a home fitness brand: quick workouts, nutrition myths, customer stories and behind the scenes.
  3. Match formats to goals. Reels and Shorts for reach, carousels for saves and education, Stories for daily contact, and posts with a clear call to action for leads.
  4. Batch and schedule. Script and shoot a week's content in one or two sittings. Meta Business Suite lets you create and schedule posts and Stories for Facebook and Instagram.
  5. Review every week. Keep what brings saves, shares and enquiries; drop what does not.

Hooks matter most in short video. Open with the problem or result in the first line on screen, for example "3 mistakes that make your dosa batter go flat", not "Hi everyone, welcome back".

Build a real social strategy and content bank

Week 6 of the ISS Marketing & Growth program covers platform strategy and a Reels, Shorts and LinkedIn content lab, with a social strategy and content bank as the output. Week 3 builds a 30-day content plan. Compare it with the process above.

What does a 30-day social media content calendar look like?

Below is a template for a small brand posting on Instagram about four to five times a week, with Stories most days. Swap in your own pillars. This is our example, not a platform recommendation for posting frequency.

WeekMonWedFriSat or SunWeekly goal
1: IntroduceReel: the problem you solveCarousel: 5 myths in your categoryReel: behind the scenesStory poll: which problem is biggest for you?Reach and profile visits
2: EducateReel: quick how-toCarousel: step-by-step guideReel: answer a real customer questionLive or Q&A StoriesSaves and shares

Keep the calendar in a spreadsheet with columns for date, platform, pillar, format, hook, caption, call to action, status and result. That sheet doubles as a portfolio piece if you are learning.

Should you use organic social or paid ads?

Most brands need both, used for different jobs.

OrganicPaid
CostTime and productionAd spend plus production
SpeedSlow to buildReach starts as soon as ads are approved
TargetingFollowers and algorithmic reachLocation, interests, lookalikes, retargeting
Best forTrust, community, testing ideasScaling what already works, lead generation, sales
RiskReach can drop with algorithm changesMoney wasted if tracking or offer is weak

A practical approach: test hooks and ideas organically, then put ad money behind the posts that already perform. Our guides on learning Meta ads and performance marketing cover the paid side.

Which social media metrics actually matter?

Choose metrics that match the goal of each post or campaign:

  • Awareness: reach, views and follower growth from non-followers.
  • Engagement quality: saves, shares and meaningful comments. These signal usefulness better than likes.
  • Action: profile visits, link clicks, DMs and WhatsApp enquiries.
  • Business result: leads, sales or sign-ups, tracked with UTM links in GA4 and, for ads, conversion tracking.
  • Paid efficiency: cost per result, click-through rate and return on ad spend.

Engagement rate is useful for comparing your own posts over time. Be careful comparing it across brands, because tools calculate it differently. Our GA4 tutorial shows how to track social traffic with UTMs.

What rules apply to influencer and brand posts in India?

If you work with creators, follow the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines for influencer advertising. Key points from ASCI's guidance:

  • A disclosure label is needed when there is any material connection between the brand and the creator, paid or unpaid, including free products.
  • Permitted labels include Advertisement, Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership, Employee and Free gift, as well as the platforms' paid-partnership tags.
  • The label must be upfront and hard to miss, not buried among hashtags. For video, ASCI sets minimum on-screen durations depending on the length of the video.

Brands are also responsible for claims in their own posts. Do not make health, income or "best" claims you cannot back up.

How does ISS teach social media marketing?

Social media is part of the Marketing & Growth program, a 16-week live online cohort, about 12–14 hours a week. Week 3 covers hooks, offers, calls to action and building a 30-day content plan (output: a 30-day calendar and 10 copy samples). Week 6 covers organic social and community growth: platform strategy and a Reels, Shorts and LinkedIn content lab, with Duolingo and Zomato social as case studies (output: a social strategy and content bank). Later weeks cover paid media, email automation and AI workflows, ending in a portfolio capstone.

The fee is ₹69,999 (₹66,499 if paid upfront). Career support includes resume, LinkedIn and portfolio reviews and mock interviews. ISS does not guarantee jobs or placement. For other options, see our guide to choosing a social media marketing course.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is social media marketing in simple words?

It is using platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp to reach the right people, build trust and get them to take an action such as enquiring or buying. It includes both unpaid posts and paid ads.

Which social media platform is best for business in India?

It depends on the customer. Instagram and YouTube have the largest ad audiences in India and suit most consumer brands, LinkedIn suits B2B and professional services, and WhatsApp is often where enquiries turn into sales. Start with one or two platforms rather than all of them.

How often should a brand post on social media?

There is no single correct number. Choose a frequency you can sustain with good quality, such as three to five feed posts a week plus Stories, and review results monthly. Consistency matters more than volume.

How do you measure social media marketing success?

Match metrics to the goal: reach and views for awareness, saves and shares for usefulness, clicks and DMs for action, and leads or sales tracked with UTM links and conversion tracking for business results.

Do influencers in India have to disclose paid posts?

Yes. ASCI guidelines require a clear disclosure label, such as Ad, Sponsored or Collaboration, whenever there is a material connection between the brand and the influencer, including free products. The label must be upfront and easy to see.

Can I learn social media marketing for free?

Yes. Free courses from HubSpot Academy and Meta, plus practice on a real or personal brand account, cover the basics. What is harder to get alone is feedback on your strategy and a portfolio with measurable results.
