How should students choose AI tools?
Pick tools by the job you need done, not by hype. Most students need help with five jobs: finding and understanding sources, writing, coding, making presentations and revising for exams. One good tool per job is enough.
Three rules before you sign up for anything:
- Start free. Every tool below has a free tier. Upgrade only after you hit its limits several times in a week.
- Watch auto-renewals. Several student offers need a payment method and renew at full price when the free period ends. Set a calendar reminder.
- Follow your college rules. Using AI to learn is different from submitting AI work as your own. Our guide to ChatGPT prompts for students explains where the line usually sits.

Which AI tools are best for research?
Perplexity answers questions with inline citations, which makes it a good starting point for a literature scan or a current-affairs topic. Treat it as a map, not the destination: open each source and read the relevant part yourself.
Gemini Deep Research is included in Gemini’s free plan and produces longer, multi-source reports. It is useful for getting an overview of an unfamiliar topic before you go to your library databases.
Gemini Notebook (Google renamed NotebookLM in July 2026) works differently. You upload your own sources, such as lecture PDFs, readings or your notes, and it answers from those. On the free Standard tier, Google lists 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats a day and 10 Deep Research runs a month.
A caution for all three: AI tools can misquote or invent. Never copy a citation into an assignment without finding the original yourself.
Which AI tools help with writing without doing it for you?
The honest use of AI in writing is feedback: finding weak arguments, unclear sentences and grammar slips in your own draft.
- Grammarly Free fixes spelling and grammar and shows your tone, with 100 AI prompts. Grammarly’s India page lists a Plus plan at ₹392 a month billed annually, which adds full-sentence rewrites and plagiarism and AI-text detection.
- ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can review a draft if you ask for critique rather than rewriting: “Point out weak arguments; do not rewrite my sentences.”
Many colleges treat heavy AI rewriting as unacceptable for graded work, so check before you use rewrite features on assignments.

GitHub Copilot works inside editors such as VS Code. The Copilot Free plan lists 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month. Verified students can go further: GitHub’s documentation says students verified through GitHub Education can activate a Copilot Student plan at no cost, although approval can take several days.
Claude and ChatGPT are useful for explaining code, error messages and concepts. The best learning prompt is “Explain what this error means and how to find the cause; do not rewrite my program.”
If you are learning to code, write the first version yourself and use AI to review it. Students who let AI write everything often struggle in technical interviews and lab exams, where it is not available.
Which AI tool makes presentations?
Gamma turns a prompt or an outline into slides, documents or a simple web page. The free plan gives 400 credits at sign-up and up to 10 slides per prompt, and you can export to PDF, PPTX or Google Slides. Paid plans remove Gamma branding.
The best results come from a clear outline you wrote yourself. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a slide-by-slide outline first, edit it, then paste it into Gamma. Check every chart and number before you present.
Which AI tools help most with exam revision?
- ChatGPT study mode asks guiding questions and checks your understanding instead of handing over answers. OpenAI says it is available across plans, including Free.
- Gemini Notebook can turn your uploaded notes into quizzes, flashcards, mind maps and Audio Overviews. The free tier lists 10 quizzes and 10 flashcard sets a day, and 3 Audio Overviews a day.
- Gemini’s student features include study notebooks, personalised quizzes and interactive visualisations, with higher limits on the Google AI Plus student plan.

What is a good free AI stack for a student in India?
Here is a ₹0 setup that covers the five jobs, using only the free tiers listed above:

If you are eligible, the Google AI Plus student plan is worth claiming, as long as you set a reminder before it renews at ₹399 a month.
Are AI tools safe for students to use?
- Do not upload your ID documents, marksheets with personal details or other students’ data.
- Check each tool’s privacy settings. ChatGPT, for example, has a setting to stop new chats being used for model training, and Claude’s pricing page lists a model-training opt-out on all plans.
- Read the minimum age and eligibility rules. Google’s student plan is for university students aged 18 and over.
- Remember that all these tools can be wrong. Your textbook, teacher and original sources come first.
What should students learn beyond using AI tools?
Knowing tools is useful; building with them is what shows up on a resume. Students who connect AI to real workflows, such as a bot that answers from college notices or an automation that sorts internship emails, have something concrete to show.
