Is the course free, or only the videos?
Before you start, check three things on the course page: whether the lessons are free, whether the graded assessments are free, and whether the certificate is free. Many platforms let you watch for free and charge for the certificate. Some offer financial aid if you apply.
We sorted the options below into three groups: certificate free, certificate needs a small exam fee, and certificate paid (lessons free or trial only).
Free AI courses with certificates compared (September 2026)
| Course | Provider | Time | Cost to learn | Cost of certificate | What the certificate shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals | IBM SkillsBuild | Several short courses (check page) | Free | Free digital credential after graded quizzes and a final assessment | Understanding of ML, NLP, computer vision, chatbots and AI ethics |
| Introduction to Generative AI | Google (Google Skills) | About 45 minutes | No fee shown on the page we checked | Completion badge | Basic understanding of what generative AI is and how it differs from traditional ML |
| NPTEL AI and ML courses (e.g. Introduction to Machine Learning) | NPTEL / SWAYAM (IIT and IISc faculty) | Semester-based, weekly assignments | Free | ₹1,000 optional proctored exam; need 40% in assignments and 40% in the exam | Academic-level understanding, tested in a proctored exam |
| Microsoft Learn AI modules | Microsoft | Varies by module | Free | Azure AI Fundamentals certification needs the paid AI-901 exam (price varies by country); Applied Skills lab credentials: check each page | Fundamentals of AI workloads on Azure, or a specific hands-on Microsoft skill |
| Generative AI Foundations | upGrad with Microsoft | About 6 hours | ₹299 (not free, but low cost) | Included | Familiarity with common AI tools and prompting |
| Google AI Essentials | Google on Coursera | Under 10 hours | 7-day free trial, then US$20 a month (India page) | Paid via subscription; financial aid may be available on Coursera | Using AI tools at work, prompting, responsible AI |
| Generative AI for Everyone | DeepLearning.AI on Coursera | About 6 hours | Free access without certificate | Paid; financial aid available for eligible learners | Conceptual understanding of generative AI and its business use |
| Career Essentials in Generative AI | Microsoft and LinkedIn | About 4 hours | LinkedIn Learning subscription required on the page we checked | Certificate of completion with subscription | AI literacy, including Microsoft Copilot |
Elements of AI, from MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki, is another free course that is well known for clear teaching. Its page now links a separate paid certificate option, so check the provider’s current page for certificate terms.
Which AI certificates are genuinely free?
IBM SkillsBuild Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals is the strongest fully free option for beginners. You complete a set of IBM-designed courses, pass graded quizzes and a final assessment, and receive a digital credential you can add to LinkedIn. It covers core AI concepts rather than hands-on building.
Google’s Introduction to Generative AI is a short microlearning course with a badge. It takes under an hour and is a good first step, but a 45-minute badge carries little weight on its own with employers.
NPTEL is the best free option for depth. Lectures by IIT and IISc faculty are free, and the ₹1,000 proctored exam gives the certificate real credibility because it is invigilated. If you want theory such as machine learning or deep learning, NPTEL is hard to beat on value.

View AI & Agentic Systems curriculum →What does a free AI certificate prove to an employer?
A free certificate proves that you finished a course and passed its assessment. That tells an employer you are curious and can complete what you start. It does not show that you can solve a real problem with AI.
| Certificate type | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Short badge (under 2 hours) | You know the basic terms | Any practical skill |
| AI literacy certificate (5–10 hours) | You understand how AI tools work and how to use them responsibly | That you can build or automate anything |
| Proctored exam certificate (NPTEL, Microsoft) | You understood the theory well enough to pass an invigilated test | That you have applied it to a real project |
| Portfolio project | You can design, build and test a working AI tool or workflow | Nothing on its own about theory depth, which is why projects plus a theory course is a strong mix |
For roles that use AI day to day, such as AI operations, automation or AI-assisted marketing and product work, hiring managers usually want to see something you built. Our guides to AI projects for your resume and AI automation projects for beginners give ideas you can start this week with free tools.
How can you build a free AI learning path?
You can go a long way without paying anything. A simple path we suggest:
- Week 1: Google’s Introduction to Generative AI (under an hour) plus Generative AI for Everyone in free mode to understand the concepts.
- Weeks 2–4: IBM SkillsBuild Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals for a free credential.
- Weeks 4–8: Build two small projects with free tiers of AI tools, such as a research assistant or a simple automation that sorts emails or form responses.
- Next semester: If you want theory depth, register for an NPTEL AI or ML course and take the ₹1,000 exam.
If you want to learn prompting in more depth first, see how to choose a prompt engineering course in India.
When is a paid AI course worth it?
A paid course is worth considering when free courses stop moving you forward. Common signs:
- You have finished two or three free courses but still have not built anything that works.
- You keep starting courses and not finishing them without a schedule or deadlines.
- You are changing careers and need someone to review your projects before interviews.
- You want structured practice with automation tools, RAG and agents, not just concepts.
What you pay for in a good paid course is live teaching time, feedback on your work and a portfolio you can show. Compare prices by type in our guide to AI course fees in India.
What does ISS offer if you decide to pay?
The ISS AI & Agentic Systems program is a 16-week live cohort, at about 12–14 hours a week, with weekend live classes and a mid-week doubt-clearing session. It moves from AI foundations and prompting to research, content systems, automations with n8n, Zapier and Make, RAG knowledge bots and vibe coding, ending with a portfolio capstone. No coding degree is needed.
The fee is ₹69,999, or ₹66,499 if paid upfront, and applying is free. Refunds are 100% before Week 1 and 75% in Weeks 1–2. Career support includes resume, LinkedIn and portfolio review and mock interviews; ISS does not guarantee placement. If free courses are working for you, keep going; the paid route is for when you need structure and feedback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which AI course gives a free certificate?
Based on official pages checked in September 2026, IBM SkillsBuild’s Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals gives a free digital credential after graded quizzes and a final assessment, and Google’s Introduction to Generative AI gives a completion badge. NPTEL courses are free to study, but the certificate needs a ₹1,000 proctored exam.
Is Google AI Essentials free?
Not fully. Google AI Essentials is offered on Coursera with a 7-day free trial, then a monthly subscription. Google’s India page listed US$20 a month in September 2026. Coursera lists financial aid for eligible learners. Check the current page before enrolling.
Is the NPTEL certificate free?
The NPTEL course is free to study. To get a certificate you register for an optional proctored exam, which is listed at ₹1,000 on NPTEL course pages checked in September 2026. You need at least 40% in assignments and 40% in the final exam.
Are free AI certificates useful for getting a job?
They help show interest and basic knowledge, especially for freshers. On their own, they rarely get you hired for AI roles. Pair a free certificate with two or three portfolio projects that show you can build and test a working AI tool or workflow.
When should I pay for an AI course instead of using free ones?
Consider a paid course when you have done a few free courses but still cannot build something that works, when you need a schedule to finish, or when you are changing careers and need expert feedback on your projects. Compare what you get for the fee: live hours, project reviews and refund terms.
