ChatGPT Prompts for Students: 40 Prompts for Revision, Doubts, Projects and Placements

Where is the line between learning and cheating with ChatGPT?

A simple test: after using ChatGPT, can you do the task yourself without it? If yes, you used it to learn. If you submitted something you could not explain in a viva, you crossed the line.

In India, the UGC notified academic integrity and plagiarism regulations in the Gazette in July 2018. They cover research work such as theses and dissertations for students, faculty and researchers. Many universities and colleges now also publish their own AI-use rules, so read those for each course. When in doubt, ask your teacher before you use AI, not after.

What is ChatGPT study mode and should students use it?

Study mode is a setting in ChatGPT that guides you with questions, explains ideas in layers and checks your understanding, instead of giving the final answer right away. OpenAI’s help page says it is available across ChatGPT plans on web, iOS and Android. You can switch it on from the tools menu in the message box.

Use study mode for concepts and practice problems. Use a normal chat when you need something quick, such as a formatting fix or a timetable. Either way, the prompts below work.

ChatGPT prompts for exam revision (1–10)

Replace the text in square brackets. Paste your own notes or syllabus where you can; answers grounded in your material are more reliable than general ones.

2. “Quiz me on [chapter], one question at a time. Wait for my answer, then tell me what I got right and what I missed.”

4. “Give me 10 multiple-choice questions on [topic] at the level of a university semester exam. Do not show the answers until I reply.”
5. “Explain [concept] in three levels: in one line, as a paragraph for a first-year student, and in exam-answer depth for 10 marks.”

ChatGPT prompts for doubt solving (11–18)

For doubts, ask for hints before answers. Working it out yourself is what makes it stick in the exam hall.

11. “I am stuck on this problem. Give me only the first hint. I will ask for the next one if I still can’t solve it. [paste problem]”
12. “Here is my working. Find the first line where I went wrong, but do not solve the rest. [paste working]”

ChatGPT prompts for college projects (19–26)

For projects, use ChatGPT as a guide and reviewer. The ideas, data, code and write-up should be yours, and you should be able to defend every decision.

19. “I am a [year, branch] student interested in [area]. Suggest 8 project ideas that solve a real problem in an Indian city or college, with difficulty level and the skills each needs.”
20. “For this project idea, list the questions my guide is likely to ask in the first review. [describe idea]”

22. “Where can I find free, public datasets for [topic] in India? Name the type of source; I will find and check the links myself.”

Never ask ChatGPT for references and paste them in unchecked. Models can produce plausible but false information, including citations; OpenAI’s own research calls this hallucination. Find every paper or source yourself, through your library, Google Scholar or the publisher’s site.

ChatGPT prompts for placement preparation (27–36)

Placement season rewards practice. These prompts turn ChatGPT into a patient practice partner for aptitude, interviews and group discussions.

27. “Give me 10 quantitative aptitude questions on [time and work / percentages / probability] at campus-placement level. Show solutions only after I answer.”
28. “Explain the fastest method for this aptitude question type and give me 5 more to practise: [paste question]”
29. “Act as an HR interviewer at an IT services company. Ask me the 8 most common HR questions for freshers one by one, and give feedback on each answer.”
30. “Here is my answer to ‘Tell me about yourself’. Make it tighter and under 60 seconds when spoken, keeping only facts I have given. [paste answer]”
31. “Give me a group discussion topic on [current theme], then list 4 points for and 4 against so I can practise both sides.”

Prompts that keep your work honest (37–40)

These four prompts help you use AI openly and within the rules.

37. “Here is my college’s AI-use policy. Summarise what I am allowed and not allowed to do for assignments, in plain words. [paste policy]”
38. “I used ChatGPT to [explain concepts / check grammar] for this assignment. Help me write a one-line disclosure statement for my submission.”
39. “Read my essay and point out places where my argument is weak. Do not rewrite any sentences; I will fix them myself. [paste essay]”
40. “After I finish this topic, ask me 5 questions without any notes so I can check that I really understand it.”

How do you check if ChatGPT’s answer is right?

• Match it with your textbook or class notes. Your syllabus and teacher decide what counts as correct for your exam.
• Redo calculations yourself. Language models can make arithmetic slips in long working.
• Ask it to check itself: “Verify this answer step by step and flag anything uncertain.” This helps, but it is not proof.
• Watch for confident wrong answers. If an answer sounds certain but does not match your notes, trust your notes and ask your teacher.
• Protect your privacy. Do not paste your Aadhaar, phone number or other students’ personal details into any chatbot.

Do students need ChatGPT Plus?

Most students do not. The Free plan includes unlimited text chats (subject to abuse guardrails) and study mode, with limits on uploads and research. When we checked OpenAI’s India pricing page in September 2026, Go was ₹399 a month and Plus ₹1,999 a month. OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School student offer of free Plus months is limited to students at eligible US institutions, so it does not apply to most students in India.

Google offers eligible university students aged 18 and over a one-year Google AI Plus plan at no cost in India until 31 December 2026. We compare this and other free options in AI tools for students.

What should students learn after prompting?

Good prompting is a starting point. The skills employers increasingly ask about are using AI inside workflows: research with citations, automations that save hours, and small tools built with AI coding assistants. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for studying?

Using ChatGPT to explain concepts, quiz you or plan revision is generally a learning aid, not cheating. Submitting AI-written work as your own, or using AI where your teacher or exam rules forbid it, is cheating. Always check your college AI-use policy.

What are the best ChatGPT prompts for exam preparation?

Prompts that make you do the work: ask ChatGPT to quiz you one question at a time, mark your answer like an examiner, turn your notes into flashcards and build a revision plan around your syllabus and the days you have left.

Is ChatGPT study mode free?

OpenAI says study mode is available across ChatGPT plans on web, iOS and Android, which includes the Free plan. It guides you with questions and step-by-step explanations instead of giving the final answer immediately.

Can teachers detect ChatGPT-written assignments?

Detection tools are not fully reliable, but teachers often notice generic writing, invented references and students who cannot explain their own work in a viva. The safer path is to use AI for learning and write your submissions yourself.

Can I use ChatGPT for my final-year project?

You can usually use it to brainstorm ideas, plan milestones, understand errors and review your drafts, if your college allows it. The code, data, analysis and report should be your own work, and you should disclose AI help when your guide asks.
