Which AI tools do digital marketers actually use?
It helps to sort tools by the job, not by the brand. A digital marketing week in an Indian agency or D2C brand usually includes research, writing, design, SEO, ad management and reporting. AI can speed up each of these, but the right tool is different for each.
The table below is our summary of common options by task. Prices come from each vendor's official pricing page, checked in September 2026. Where a vendor does not show a fixed public price, we say so.
| Task | Example tools | Free option? | Paid entry price (checked Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research and briefs | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | Yes, all have free tiers | ChatGPT Go US$8/month and Plus US$20/month (US pricing); Claude Pro US$20/month or US$17/month billed annually; Google AI Plus ₹399/month and Google AI Pro ₹1,950/month in India; Perplexity: see the vendor's pricing page |
| Copy and content drafts | The same general assistants | Yes | As above |
| Creative and design | Canva (AI features inside the editor), Google Flow via Google AI plans | Canva has a free plan | Canva: see Canva's India pricing page; Google AI Plus includes 200 Flow credits |
| SEO research | Semrush, Ahrefs | Semrush free plan (10 reports a day); Ahrefs free tools | Semrush SEO plan US$139/month; Ahrefs Starter US$29/month, Lite US$129/month |
| Ads | Google Ads AI Max for Search, Performance Max; Meta Advantage+ | Built into the ad platforms | No separate subscription; you pay for media |
| Analytics | GA4 generated insights and Analytics Intelligence | Built into GA4 | No separate subscription for standard GA4 |
| CRM and email | HubSpot (Breeze AI features) | HubSpot free plan for up to 2 users | Paid tiers vary and promotions change; see HubSpot's pricing page |
Indian prices for ChatGPT and Claude are shown at checkout and can differ from US prices after tax. If you are paying yourself, compare the checkout price in rupees before you subscribe.
How can AI help with customer and market research?
Research is where general assistants save the most time, as long as you treat them as a starting point. Good uses:
- Summarising reviews. Paste 50 Amazon or Google reviews of a product (your own or a competitor's) and ask for the top five complaints and the exact phrases customers use. Those phrases become ad hooks.
- Drafting an ICP. Ask for a first draft of an ideal customer profile for, say, a Pune-based B2B accounting software firm. Then correct it with what you learn from real sales calls.
- Competitor pages. Ask an assistant with web search to list the offers and prices on three competitor landing pages, then open each page and check.
What AI cannot do is talk to your customers. Three 20-minute customer calls will usually tell you more than any prompt. Use AI to prepare the interview guide and summarise the notes afterwards.
Which AI tools are good for ad copy and content?
For copy, the three main assistants (ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini) are broadly comparable for marketing writing. Pick the one your team already pays for. The quality of your brief matters more than the tool.
A useful copy prompt includes the audience, the single benefit, proof, the format limit and examples of your brand voice. For example:
You are writing Google Search ad headlines for an online Hindi-English
spoken English course for working adults in Tier-2 cities.
Main benefit: speak confidently in office meetings within 8 weeks.
Proof: live weekend classes, small batches.
Rules: 10 headlines, each 30 characters or fewer, no exclamation marks,
no claims about jobs or salary. Return a table: headline | character count.
Always recount the characters yourself. Assistants often miscount, and Google Ads will reject headlines over the limit.
For long-form SEO content, Google's own guidance says using AI is not against its rules, but creating many pages without adding value can count as scaled content abuse. Use AI for outlines and first drafts, then add your own data, examples and expert review.
Learn these workflows with feedback, not just prompts
The ISS Marketing & Growth program teaches AI-native workflows alongside research, copy, SEO and paid media, with tools such as HubSpot, Perplexity, Zapier and Make. Compare the syllabus with the task list above.

Canva's AI features and Google's Flow (included with Google AI plans, with a monthly credit allowance) can produce quick concepts for social posts and ad variations. For most small brands, the practical use is resizing, background removal and generating several layout options from one approved design.
Be careful with three things:
- Product accuracy. AI images can change a product's shape, label or colour. For e-commerce, use real product photos and let AI handle backgrounds or layouts.
- People and likeness. Do not generate images that look like real celebrities or customers, and do not show fake testimonials.
- Platform rules. Google asks e-commerce sites to mark AI-generated product images with IPTC metadata. Check each ad platform's current policy on AI disclosure before launching.
Which AI tools help with SEO in 2026?
SEO suites have added AI features, especially for AI search. Semrush's paid tiers above its SEO plan add tracking of prompts in AI assistants (the Starter tier at US$199 a month tracks 50 prompts), and Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI from US$199 a month. HubSpot also lists an AEO tool in beta at US$50 a month. All prices were checked on the vendors' pages in September 2026.
For learning, you do not need these. Google has said there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Start with free tools: Google Search Console, the Semrush free plan and Ahrefs' free tools. Read our guide to what SEO is and keyword research before paying for a suite.
How does AI work inside Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4?
Much of the AI a performance marketer uses every day is already in the platforms:
- Google Ads AI Max for Search. Google describes it as an optimisation layer you turn on inside an existing Search campaign, not a new campaign type. Its main features are search term matching and asset optimisation, including text customisation and final URL expansion.
- Meta Advantage+. Meta offers end-to-end Advantage+ campaigns that automate audience, placement and budget, plus single-step Advantage+ options you can switch on individually.
- GA4 generated insights. GA4 summarises trends and significant changes in plain language at the top of reports, and Analytics Intelligence flags unusual changes.
These tools work best when your conversion tracking is right. If GA4 or the Meta pixel records the wrong events, the AI optimises for the wrong thing. Our GA4 tutorial for beginners and what is performance marketing guide explain the measurement basics.
What does a simple AI marketing workflow look like?
Here is an example weekly workflow for one marketer running social and search for a small D2C skincare brand. It is our illustration, not a prescribed process.
- Monday: research. Paste last week's customer reviews and support messages into an assistant. Ask for recurring questions and objections.
- Tuesday: plan. Turn the top three objections into a content plan: two Reels scripts, one carousel and one blog outline.
- Wednesday: create. Draft copy with the assistant, design in Canva from brand templates, and write 10 ad headline variants.
- Thursday: launch and automate. Load approved ads. Use Zapier or Make to send new leads from a form to a sheet and a WhatsApp or email follow-up.
- Friday: measure. Read GA4 and ad platform reports, including generated insights, and write a five-line summary of what to change next week.
How do you check AI output before publishing?
Use a short checklist every time. It takes five minutes and prevents most embarrassing mistakes.
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Facts and numbers | Every price, statistic and claim traced to a source you opened yourself |
| Claims that need proof | No "best", "guaranteed" or health and income claims you cannot substantiate, in line with ASCI's advertising code |
| Brand voice | Reads like your brand, not like generic AI text; cut filler openings |
| Platform limits | Character counts, image ratios and policy rules for the specific platform |
| Data privacy | No customer names, phone numbers or private data pasted into tools your company has not approved |
| Originality | Adds something competitors do not have: your data, examples or opinion |
The last point matters for careers too. Hiring managers can see when a portfolio is all AI output. Show your judgement: what you asked the tool, what you changed and why. Our digital marketing portfolio guide explains how to present that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best AI tool for digital marketing?
There is no single best tool. Most marketers do well with one general assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for research and copy, plus the AI built into Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4. Choose the assistant your team already uses and spend your effort on better briefs and checks.
Are there free AI tools for digital marketing?
Yes. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all have free tiers, Canva has a free plan, Semrush has a free plan with 10 reports a day, and the AI features in Google Ads, Meta Advantage+ and GA4 come with those platforms. Paid plans mainly add higher usage limits.
Will AI replace digital marketers?
AI is taking over repetitive drafting, resizing and reporting tasks. Deciding who to target, what to say, which channel to fund and whether a result is real still needs a person. Marketers who can use AI well and check its output are in a stronger position than those who avoid it.
Does Google penalise AI-generated content?
Google says using AI to create content is not against its guidelines in itself. It does warn that generating many pages without value for users can break its spam policy on scaled content abuse. Focus on accuracy, originality and usefulness.
How much do AI marketing tools cost in India?
As checked in September 2026, Google AI Plus is 399 rupees a month and Google AI Pro is 1,950 rupees a month in India. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro list 20 US dollars a month in US pricing, with local prices shown at checkout. SEO suites such as Semrush start at 139 US dollars a month.
Should I put AI tools on my marketing resume?
Yes, if you can show how you used them. Instead of listing tool names, describe a result: for example, how you used an assistant to cluster 200 keywords or test 10 ad headlines, and what you changed after checking the output.
