What should a Google Ads course teach?
Whether you learn free or paid, check that you come out able to do these things:
| Skill area | What you should be able to do |
|---|---|
| Account structure | Set up campaigns, ad groups, keywords and ads so budgets and reports make sense |
| Keyword research | Use Keyword Planner, sort keywords by intent, and use match types and negative keywords |
| Ad copy and assets | Write responsive search ads and add sitelinks, callouts and other assets |
| Bidding and budgets | Choose between manual and automated bidding, and set daily budgets you can defend |
| Conversion tracking | Set up conversions, link Google Ads with GA4, and check the numbers match reality |
| Campaign types | Know when to use Search, Performance Max, Display, Video (YouTube) and Shopping |
| Optimisation | Read search term reports, pause waste, and test landing pages and ads |
| Reporting | Explain cost per lead, conversion rate and return on ad spend to a client or manager |
If you are new to paid media, read what performance marketing is first. It explains the metrics that every Google Ads report uses.
Is Google Skillshop enough to learn Google Ads?
Skillshop is Google's own free training site. It teaches the product accurately and is always up to date with Google's current features. Certifications are available for Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Measurement.
Each assessment is 75 minutes, needs 80% to pass, and can be retaken after one day. Certifications last one year, after which you retake the assessment. The training and assessments are free.
Skillshop is enough for theory. It is not enough for judgement. It will teach you what Performance Max does, but not how to tell a client in Pune that their ₹30,000 budget is too thin for it. For that, you need practice and feedback.
When is a paid Google Ads course worth it?
Paid Google Ads courses in India range from short recorded courses to multi-month programmes that bundle Google Ads with other channels. Prices vary widely, so check each provider's current page rather than trusting lists. A paid course is worth considering if it offers at least two of these:
- Live practice on a real account, not only slides and screenshots.
- Feedback from a practitioner on your keyword plans, ads and reports.
- Conversion tracking taught hands-on, including GA4 and Google Tag Manager.
- A case study you keep, which you can use in your portfolio.
Be careful with courses that promise a job or a specific salary. No course can guarantee either. For a wider checklist, see how to choose a performance marketing course.
How do the main ways to learn Google Ads compare?
| Option | Format | Cost | Hands-on practice | Feedback on your work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Skillshop | Self-paced, official | Free | Limited; theory and scenarios | No |
| Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate (Coursera) | Self-paced, 8 courses, about 6 months at 10 hrs/week | Coursera subscription; check Coursera's page | Guided projects | Peer-graded |
| upGrad + MICA Advanced Certificate | Recorded + live sessions, 4-month core | ₹84,999 listed for the core | Beginner track lists a Google Ads campaign project | Check with upGrad |
| ISS Marketing & Growth | Live online cohort, 16 weeks, 12–14 hrs/week | ₹69,999 (₹66,499 upfront) | Paid media within a full-funnel programme, ending in a capstone | Yes, live mentor feedback |
ISS is a broader marketing programme, not a Google Ads specialist course. If you only want Google Ads, Skillshop plus practice may be all you need.
Want Google Ads inside a full-funnel plan?
The ISS Marketing & Growth programme teaches paid media alongside customer research, copy, SEO and analytics, with live mentor feedback. Compare its curriculum with the options above.

Employers want to see that you have spent real money carefully. Here are safer ways to get there, from zero risk to small risk.
- Plan without spending. Create a Google Ads account and use Keyword Planner to build a full keyword plan and campaign structure for a local business. You can build campaigns without launching them.
- Practise measurement free. Google's GA4 demo account gives any Google user viewer access to real, obfuscated data from the Google Merchandise Store. Use it to practise reading traffic and conversion reports.
- Volunteer for a nonprofit. Google Ad Grants offers free search advertising to eligible nonprofits. Check Google's eligibility page for India, then offer to help a registered NGO set up or improve its account.
- Help a small business. A family shop, a tutor or a clinic may pay for a small test. Agree the budget, goal and reporting in writing before you start.
- Run your own capped test. Promote a small project of your own, such as a blog or a digital product, with a strict daily cap.
Safety rules for any live spend: set a daily budget and an end date, start with exact and phrase match plus negative keywords, set up conversion tracking before launch, and check the search terms report every day for the first week.
As a rough estimate, ₹300–₹500 a day for 10–14 days is often enough to learn from a small local search test. This is our editorial estimate, not a Google figure. Costs per click vary a lot by industry and city.
What does a four-week Google Ads learning plan look like?
| Week | Learn | Do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Skillshop: Google Ads Search | Build a keyword plan for one local business |
| 2 | Conversion tracking, GA4 basics | Explore the GA4 demo account; write down three insights |
| 3 | Ad copy, assets and bidding | Write 3 responsive search ads; launch a capped test if you can afford it |
| 4 | Optimisation and reporting | Review search terms, add negatives, write a one-page report |
At the end, take the Google Ads Search certification and turn your work into a case study. Our performance marketing portfolio guide shows how to structure it.
What do employers check in a Google Ads interview?
- Can you explain why you chose a match type or a bidding strategy?
- Can you read a search terms report and say what to exclude?
- Do you know how conversions are tracked, and what happens when tracking is wrong?
- Can you explain a result, good or bad, and what you would do next?
The certificate gets you through a first screen. The conversation about your own campaign gets you further. See our digital marketing interview questions for practice, and pair search skills with social ads using our Meta ads learning guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free Google Ads course with a certificate?
Yes. Google Skillshop offers free Google Ads training and free certifications in Search, Display, Video, Shopping and Measurement. Each certification is valid for one year.
How long does it take to learn Google Ads?
You can cover Skillshop's Search training in a few days. Becoming confident usually takes several weeks of practice on real campaigns, reading reports and fixing problems.
What is the pass mark for the Google Ads certification?
You need 80% or higher. You have 75 minutes, and if you fail you can retake the assessment after one day.
Can I practise Google Ads without spending money?
Yes, partly. You can build keyword plans and campaigns without launching them, and practise reporting in Google's free GA4 demo account. Real spend, even a small capped budget, teaches things a simulation cannot.
Does a Google Ads course guarantee a job?
No course can guarantee a job. A certification and a portfolio with real campaign work improve your chances, but hiring depends on the role, your interview and the market.
