What does a generative AI course actually teach?
A generative AI course teaches you to use, and sometimes build with, models that produce text, images, audio or code. The word covers very different things. At one end it means learning to prompt ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot well at work. At the other end it means writing Python to build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems and agents that run in production.
Most courses fall into one of three layers:
- AI literacy: how large language models work, prompting, responsible use, everyday productivity. Usually 5–10 hours, self-paced.
- Applied or no-code building: prompt chains, research workflows, content systems, automations in tools like n8n, Zapier or Make, and knowledge bots. Usually weeks to a few months, often with live sessions.
- Engineering: Python, machine learning, deep learning, LLM APIs, RAG, agent frameworks and MLOps. Usually 6–15 months.

A few things stand out. The low-cost courses are genuinely useful for AI literacy and cost less than a dinner out. The IIT Kanpur course offers faculty-led teaching at a modest fee but runs only seven weeks. The university-partner and Scaler programs go much deeper into engineering and are priced accordingly.
Are short or free generative AI courses enough?
For many people, yes. If your goal is to write better emails, summarise documents, draft presentations or research faster, a 6–10 hour course like Google AI Essentials or DeepLearning.AI’s Generative AI for Everyone covers the core ideas. Both come from organisations that know the field well, and both are easy to finish in a week.
Where short courses stop is proof of skill. They do not ask you to build anything that runs on its own, and there is no one reviewing your work. An employer hiring for an AI operations, automation or AI engineering role will look for projects, not only certificates. Self-paced courses are cheaper and flexible, but completion depends on your own discipline. Live cohorts cost more because they include teaching time, feedback and a fixed schedule. The right choice depends on how you learn and how much feedback you need.
- Choose self-paced if you are learning for your current job, need only the basics, or already build things and want a quick update.
- Choose a live cohort if you are changing careers, need deadlines to finish, or want someone to review your projects before you show them to employers.
Check the actual live hours. “Live sessions” can mean two hours every weekend or a monthly webinar. The IIT Kanpur course lists sessions four evenings a week. ISS runs two-hour live classes on Saturday and Sunday plus a mid-week doubt-clearing session. Ask every provider for the weekly timetable in writing.
Should you pick a no-code track or an engineering track?
This is the most important decision, and it depends on the role you want:

Neither track is better in general. Engineering programs prepare you for roles where you write and maintain code. How to choose a generative AI course: a 6-point checklist
- Name the outcome. Write down the role or task you want to do after the course. Match it to a row in the table above.
- Read the week-by-week syllabus. Look for what you will build each week, not just topic names.
- Count real live hours. Ask for the weekly timetable and whether sessions are recorded.
- Ask who reviews your projects. Feedback on your work is what separates a course from a video library.
- Read the refund policy before paying. Get it in writing, including the last date for a full refund.
- Treat placement claims carefully. Ask how any outcome figure was calculated. No course can promise you a job.
