Which free data analytics courses give a certificate?
We checked each provider's official page in September 2026. “Free to learn” and “free certificate” are not the same thing, so the table separates them.

What does each certificate prove to an employer?
A certificate is a signal. It helps to know what kind of signal each one sends.
- Google and IBM (Coursera): you completed a structured, broad introduction and finished graded assignments. They are well known, so recruiters recognise them. Because they are self-paced with auto-graded work, they show commitment more than depth. See our review of whether the Google Data Analytics Certificate is worth it.
- Microsoft PL-300: you passed a proctored exam on preparing, modelling, visualising and securing data in Power BI. It is a stronger tool-specific signal, but the exam is paid and needs renewal every 12 months through a free online assessment.
- NPTEL: you passed an in-person proctored exam, with 75% of the score from the final exam and 25% from assignments. Indian employers and colleges know NPTEL, and the proctoring makes the score credible. Courses tend to be academic, so pair them with applied projects.
- Kaggle Learn: you finished short, hands-on tutorials. Useful for learning, but light as a hiring signal on its own.
- Trailhead badges: you completed a Tableau learning trail. Treat them as learning milestones rather than credentials.
Do free certificates help you get a data analyst job?
They help you get past the first filter, especially when you have no degree or work experience in data. They rarely decide the interview. In analyst interviews, you are usually asked to write SQL, interpret a chart or walk through a project. A certificate cannot do that for you.
The better way to think about it: use free courses to learn, and use projects to prove. Three strong projects plus one recognised certificate is a sensible target for most beginners.

A free learning path you can follow
- Weeks 1–4: Kaggle Learn Intro to SQL and Pandas, plus Excel practice with a public dataset.
- Weeks 5–12: Google or IBM certificate on Coursera, applying for financial aid if you need it.
- Weeks 13–16: Microsoft Learn Power BI paths or Trailhead Tableau trails, and your first dashboard.
- Alongside: an NPTEL course in statistics or Python if you want a proctored certificate that Indian employers recognise.
- Throughout: build and publish one project every three to four weeks.

How should you list free certificates on your resume?
Put certificates in a short “Certifications” section below your projects, not above them. Include the provider, the course name and the month you finished. If a certificate has a verification link, add it to LinkedIn.
Avoid listing every short course. Five Kaggle certificates and three Trailhead badges can look like padding. Pick the one or two that best match the role, and let your projects carry the rest.
When is a paid course worth it over free ones?
Free courses cover the content well. What they usually lack is feedback, deadlines and people to learn with. A paid course is worth considering if you have tried free courses and stalled, if you want someone to review your SQL and dashboards, or if you need a structured schedule alongside a job.
