Which job titles should freshers search for?
"Data analyst" is only one of the titles for entry-level analytics work. Many freshers get their first analyst job under a different name, then move to a data analyst title within a year or two. Titles such as product analyst and marketing analyst exist too, but they more often ask for 1–2 years' experience. Apply if the listing fits, but do not rely on them.
What do fresher data analyst listings ask for?
Read 20 listings for your target titles and city, and you will see the same core skills again and again. AmbitionBox's top skills for data analysts include SQL, Excel, Python, Power BI and Tableau. In practice, fresher listings tend to ask for:
- SQL: filtering, GROUP BY, joins. Many online tests stop here; some add CTEs and window functions.
- Excel: PivotTables, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, basic charts and cleaning.
- One BI tool: Power BI or Tableau. You do not need both.
- Python basics: often "good to have" rather than required at entry level, though some roles test it.
- Statistics basics: averages vs medians, percentages, simple distributions.
- Communication: explaining a number to someone who does not work with data.
- Degree: many listings ask for any graduate degree; some prefer engineering, statistics, economics or commerce.

What should a fresher's data analyst portfolio include?
Without work experience, projects are your evidence. Two or three well-explained projects beat ten tutorial copies. Each one should start with a business question and end with a recommendation.

Host SQL and notebooks on GitHub, dashboards on Tableau Public or as screenshots with a short video walkthrough, and link all of them from your resume and LinkedIn. Watch for red flags: any "job" or "internship" that asks you to pay a fee to join, or a listing that promises a guaranteed placement after a paid course. Genuine employers do not charge candidates.
How do you make applications get replies?
- One page, projects first. Put projects above education if you have no work experience.
- Lead each project with the finding. "Found that 38% of returns came from one category" (an illustrative example) beats "Built a dashboard using Power BI". Use the real numbers from your own project.
- Match keywords honestly. Use the same tool names the listing uses, but only for tools you can be tested on.
- Tailor the top third. Adjust your summary and project order for each title family (MIS, BI, analyst).
- Track everything. Keep a sheet with company, title, date applied, channel and response. After 50 applications, look at which channel and title get replies and do more of that.

What does the fresher interview process look like?
It varies by employer, but most fresher analyst hiring follows a similar path:
- Online test: aptitude and logical reasoning, plus SQL or Excel questions.
- Technical round: live SQL, Excel tasks, or questions about your projects.
- Case or take-home task: a dataset and a question, with a day or two to reply. Common at startups.
- Manager or HR round: communication, motivation and notice period.
